Past

Khayr ibn Hamza al Djazairi started his life east of The Elkyr Mountains among the nomadic tribes of the Corosis region. His people--no matter their gender---were known to be great warriors. They believed that all were equal, and that a leader was chosen because of personal merits rather than divine rights. They had everything they needed within their lands thus they had no reason to see what was on the other side. They had no idea there were people west of the mountain until they day they showed up. Through, they possibility did occur to them. Some of his people claimed they should drive them out of his lands that their coming only spelt disaster for their people. Others thought this was foolish. These people west of the mountain was no more threat to them than any they had encounter. They were great warriors they could defeat any armies that came their way.

At first, these newcomers appeared to be nothing more than simple explorers and traders. This, however, did not last. Their true motivations from traveling across The Elkyr Mountains soon revealed itself---they were conquerors and Khayr's people were their latest conquests. They thought getting the Corosii tribes to submit to their will would be easy. It might have been because the tribes were not a united front. Each tribe was its own nation, and they often fought amongst each other. There were those whom claimed that if all the tribes had become one united force that they would have driven out their invaders to such an extent that they would never have dreamt of coming, but the prospect of having their way of life changed by outsiders were not enough to convince them to overcome their other differences.

When Khayr came screaming into the world the war between his people and The Empire---as the invaders called themselves--had been going strong for several years, but Khayr didn't encounter a member of The Empire until years after his birth. However, this did not mean he was a stranger to the horrors of war. His tribe had engaged in many conflicts with other tribes, and when he was six years old his tribe was brutally slaughter by another. It was only by sheer luck that he managed to escape with his life. His mother had managed to hid him with his younger sister beneath some furs within their tent before the enemy busted inside. He watched from his hiding spot as the chieftain from this other tribe had his dogs tear his mother and two older sisters apart. Somehow neither Khayr or his sister made a sound as their mother and sisters were horrifically slaughtered before them nor did the enemy's leader have the tent searched for more people.

Khayr and his sister remained beneath the fur for several hours after the enemies left the tent. Eventually, they crawled out from their hiding spot to see what was left of their tribe. They found nothing. Every member of their tribe had been slaughtered. They were the only survivors. They knew they couldn't remain there, but they didn't know where to go. They wandered for several weeks until they were found and taken in by another tribe. It wasn't long after this that Khayr and his sister encountered their first soldier from the empire. The man had came to their tribe to try to convince them to submit to the empire, but they refused. The soldier told them that they would regret it, and the chieftain of Khayr's adopted tribe told him that it was better to die free than to live enslaved. Khayr was moved by the chieftain's words more than that he was moved by the way a man stared into a man twice his size eyes' and did not cower.

It was within that moment he decided that he will fight for his people's freedom or die trying. He grew to be an incredible warrior. Many even claimed that he was one of their best, and those within his adoptive tribe chose him as their leader once their previous one had died. In fact, other tribes saw within him the man whom could finally unit them all underneath one banner and begun to flock towards him. This was not something that the empire wanted---especially not the general whom had been tasked with the responsibility of bringing the Corosii tribes to heel. His entire career depended on the successful completion of this mission, and he knew what awaited him if he failed. Lucky for him, there were members of the Corossi tribes whom were envious of Khayr, and the general used their jealousy to his benefit.

One of the men whom was jealous of Khayr was a member of his adoptive tribe, and one of his closet friends. He was a man Khayr thought as his brother. Both because they had fought in countless battles together and because they had married each other's sisters. The general promised his brother leadership of the tribe if he helped him capture Khayr. This was far from the only thing that the general promised Khayr's brother, but it was the thing to convince him to betray his brother. He knew that he wouldn't be able to defeat Khayr on information that his brother might provide him. He had convinced other men to betray Khayr just as he did his brother. He used them to learn of Khayr's battle plans and tactics, but quickly discovered that his target had the uncanny ability to think on his feet.

The general decided that the only way to defeat Khayr was to ensure he didn't partake in the next battle. He told Khayr's brother to put a drop of poison into his drink. It wouldn't kill him, but it would make it so he was unable to fight. In fact, the general told Khayr's brother to put the poison in as many of Khayr's warriors as possible. Khayr's brother did as he was asked, and the poison had a clear effect upon those whom were given it. However, it did not knock Khayr out like the general had hoped. Khayr made quick work of those that the general had sent to capture him, but he knew something was wrong. It wasn't the poison, but this overwhelming feeling that something terrible was going to happen to his family. He didn't know where this feeling came from, but he knew he couldn't ignore it.

He rushed to where the member of his tribe whom weren't fighting the empire had set up camp. His brother tried to convince him not to. He was ill, and his illness was making him delirious. Khayr's ignored his pleas and rushed to where his wife and newborn was, and when he came upon them both Khayr and his brother was horrified by what they saw. The general had decided to attack them. His brother screamed that wasn't apart of the arrangement and within that moment Khayr knew he had betrayed him. He turned towards his brother and told him that whatever the general had promised he had no intention of honoring. His kind did not know the meaning of the word. He pleaded with his brother to do what was right, and help Khayr put an end to the general. It was clear Khayr's words moved his brother, but in the end he decided to trust that the general would ultimately keep his end of the bargain.

He knocked Khayr out with the blunt end of his blade. The last thing Khayr saw before he was rendered unconscious was his child being ripped from his wife's arm. He was probably only out for a few hours, but when he awoke he found himself in chains and across from him was his brother's head along with the heads of several other of Khayr's people. He tried to look for the head of his wife or sister, but he was given no real time to do so. As soon as, his capture were aware that he was awake they yanked his attention away from the heads staring at him and towards the general. Khayr thought he was going to share their fate. He believed that his head was going to join those as a warning towards those whom might try to stand against the empire. He wanted to tell the general that such an action would not deter his people's will to fight, but before he could utter this thought aloud the general revealed to him that was not going to be his fate.

The general told him that he was going to bring him to the empire to become a gladiator. His entire identity would be stripped and he would become nothing more than a tool for the empire entertainment. Khayr informed the general it would be a better decision to kill him because one way or another he would break free, and when he does he will hunt the general down and kill him. The general just laughed at that, and told Khayr that will never happen. The only way he will ever be free of his chain is through death. With those words, the general took Khayr west of The  Elkyr Mountains while hinting the entire time that his wife, sister and newborn child was alive.

Present

Once within the empire it didn't take the general long to find someone interested in buying Khayr, In fact, there were many whom wished to purchase him. They knew of his people prowess upon the field of battle, but he was one of only a few--if not the only warrior of his tribes brought west of The Elkyr mountain.  The man whom the general sold Khayr to was a close friend of his and a man whom he believed could utterly break Khayr. True to his word, Khayr's master attempted to strip him of his identity, and make him nothing more than a tool eager to please his master in whatever way his master wishes. It became clear that Khayr was used for more than fights within the arena. His master allowed those whom wished to see what it was like to sleep with a gladiator to purchase him for the evening.  His name was changed to Adorjan Airo. Yet, try as he might Khayr's new master could not break him.

He remained defiant to his master's will, and looked for ways to break free of his chains. He gathered others to his cause, and the mistreatment of the other slaves became clear. He soon decided that he wanted freedom for everyone. No one was going to serve if they didn't wish to. He knew that such a task wasn't going to be easy, but it had to be done. With the help of the other gladiators they broke free of their chains and worked to free those less capable of fighting of theirs. He knows he might die before he see his dream become a reality and he very well might not fulfill his promise to the general. Yet, if his wife, sister, or child are  alive the successful completion of his cause will ensure they live their last days free.

Many have flocked to his cause. They have risen an army of sorts, but there are those that claim they will never be able to take on The Empire. There are those that claim The Empire will crush their little rebellion and everything will return to the way it was. One extremely vocal person for empire's is a woman by the name of Cassia Antias. She had been one of those women whom had ended up sleeping with him, but it had been because her father had orchestrated their encounter rather than her own decision. He is certain if she had any choice about the deed it would have never happened. Whether or not the decision had been hers, one thing was clear it left her pregnant with his child.
